This role will lead on the Council’s housing delivery strategy, developing an innovative investment approach which will deliver new homes, and create social and financial return for the district.Reporting to the Chief Executive, you’ll play an important role in strategic policy formulation, implementation and the development of new thinking and expert advice to the Chief Executive, Leader and members.

In addition to leading the management and continuous improvement of all housing services, you will also oversee the Council’s corporate projects. You’ll have a critical ambassadorial role both within and beyond the organisation, and will be expected to lead and influence at all levels. Your principal areas of responsibility will include:

• Health and Safety
• Corporate Projects, Performance and Sustainability and Climate Change

You will be accountable for ensuring that our housing stock is safe, conforms to or exceeds the Homes Standard, and that we sustain our focus on all compliance-related functions. We’ve just launched a new online choice-based lettings system, which will give residents more choice and control over the allocations process and reduce the number of empty properties. You’ll also be responsible for overseeing the progress and expansion of our new-build programme.

The Council’s Climate Action Strategy ambition to be net-zero carbon as soon as viable before 2050 also is a significant strategic consideration for this role. We have already partnered with E.ON to deliver energy-cutting and cost-saving measures (loft and cavity wall insulation) as well as heat pumps and solar panel installation, and we want to ramp up this programme in the near term.

Candidates will have the complete senior leadership repertoire – a horizon scanner, team player and able to play a full part in the council’s Corporate Management Team. Extensive experience of housing management, tenant engagement and asset management are all essential, and you will also have increased stock numbers through both development and acquisition. Politically literate and able to act as an expert adviser to elected members, you will relish the chance to put all of your experience to work in a very special part of the world.
